Warwick Beacon: "Pod" to Prevent Hospital-Acquired Infections. “I wish I could have the Patient Pod even in a hotel room.” - Rene Fischer, Chief Nursing Officer, Senior VP, Patient Services, Kent Hospital
“I had a double-knee surgery. I used my Patient Pod while in the hospital, then at my rehab hospital. The bed table (and everything on it) would sometimes get wheeled away, but with the Patient Pod I could always reach everything and didn't have to worry about my personal items. The nurses at the rehab hospital had never seen the Patient Pod before, but everyone noticed it and liked it - they even brought in their supervisor, who loved it too. It's been more than six weeks since the surgery, and I am still using the Patient Pod at home. It’s a wonderful thing."

--Susan Barrett, patient, retired school teacher, RI

“What I like best about the Patient Pod is it adds a personal touch for the patient.”

----RN, Rehab unit, 300-bed community hospital

“It was so wonderful to have everything I needed at my fingertips without having to bother the nurse. The best feature of the Pod is the message center. It allowed me to leave a note about some medication I needed but I kept missing the nurse because I was dozing from the anesthesia. So, I simply wrote my note and placed it in the message center on the Pod so that the next time the nurse came in while I was dozing she saw the note. When I woke, my medication was on my bedside table!!!

Lisa, Patient Pod User, Providence, RI

“The Patient Pod was an invaluable asset to me during my hospitalization and rehabilitation, not only in storing my personal items, but in providing security and quick availability of important papers. The Pod is a winner for the patient from every standpoint.”  -Robert J. Shapiro, Superintendent Emeritus of the Warwick, RI, School Department

“I loved it! It never left my walker. I know exactly where it is right now. I put my cell phone, my pills, tissues, my wallet, my insurance card inside…. I have used it every day since leaving the hospital. I only wish I’d gotten it during my hospitalization rather than as I was leaving. Now that would have been a big help! I was in the branded merchandise business for more than 30 years in the Boston area…we look at products and their utility all the time. This one is a real winner. I would use it again in a heartbeat.”

---Dick Jacobs, knee replacement patient, semi-retired, Scottsdale, Arizona

“OMG, what a brilliant idea, someone (probably a woman) is a genius!” Wish I had one for Wednesday's procedure. My favorite part is a real “connection” having a picture in the front of the pod which stimulates a conversation/connection with service care providers. When you're in the hospital it's hard not to feel like just other patient (or another number of some sort), this helps to promote a "human" interaction.”

--Lisa Bilello, patient, Merrick, New York

“ Pear Health LLC has made one of the greatest breakthroughs of the decade in patient health…the answer to one of the most disturbing problems facing patients: hospital-acquired infections.”
--Wayne Weiner, D.Ed., Former Senior Consultant, National Institute of Health
“The patients absolutely love it.”

---Jane Nardone, RN

“I wish I’d thought of it.”

---Gigi E., RN, Pre-Admissions

“The nurses thought it was brilliant.”

---Nurse Administrator, Surgical unit

“I like that there’s less clutter at the bedside table.”

----Karen Magierabu, RN

“The only way I would suggest the Patient Pod be improved is if we had more to give out”.

---RN, Warwick, RI

“How does the caregiver find something sincere and reassuring to say to the 50th patient in a row? The Patient Pod™ places both patient and caregiver in a mutual context. It offers a way to arrest caregivers at each patient and re-align their approach. It helps patients manage fear, and keeps them proactive and out of victim mode. It could bring a lot of kindness to a moment. Like a work of art, once perceived it is hard to imagine not having it around.”

--Timothy Dukes, PhD, Author, Psychodynamics of Loving Attention

"The Patient Pod™…provides a simple way to take better care of patients, making them safer and more comfortable, and gives them some control and dignity at a time when they have so little"
--Fred Lee, Author, If Disney Ran Your Hospital
“Most times the patients hit the call button, it was for pain medication, and less often to retrieve personal items.”

--Lisette G., RN, Surgical unit

“I visited a friend in the hospital yesterday…it was like a commercial for the Patient Pod™. My friend had only been in the hospital for 2 days but her personal space and the general environment were already chaotic…I recall from my own hospital experience that the chaos starts right away, as in “Where’s my stuff?” and “What happened to the nurse I just met a minute ago, and why is this new person calling me Ron?”

--Ross Mitchel, Principal & Founder, www.implementationsinc.com

“I’m a nurse, but I think…it was great information and people who don’t already know about infection and prevention, wound care and etc… would learn a great deal. it makes the patient feel more in control during their stay at the hospital. They are able to clean their hands and ask others to clean their hands prior to caring for them and the product is right next to them. They can also place other hygiene products such as toothbrush and toothpaste in the bag so they don’t have to call for a tech in the am to help get them set up to do am care. The pocket in the front has an area to place patient name for added patient security and an area for a 4x6 photo if the patient wants a little piece of home while they are in the hospital.”

---Angie S., hospital patient

“Patients need to concentrate on healing - not where something is or how to reach an item. Family members can rest assured that the patient’s basic needs are at hand when the Patient Pod is nearby. No more worrying about not being able to reach the basic items like pen and paper or a tissue.”

--Ilene Corina, Nationally Recognized Patient Advocate, Board Member, Joint Commission

“The education, the versatility and the convenience were great…the photo area is especially nice for long-term patients to help them feel connected.”

---Jennifer A., RN, Surgical unit
